The only reason children appear to be improving is because of Campbell's Law: teach to the test and kids will improve on that test, but give a different test and they bomb it. The NAEP (National Assessment of Educational Progress) shows that while the achievement gap was closing by half between 1971 and 1988, it has remained the same since NCLB and teaching to the test. We are doing a huge disservice to our students by giving them only short-term test strategies instead of life-long thinking skills. Where did you get this data?
